We are excited to present to you a wonderful Martin HD-28 2R!
This HD-28, a modern variant of the iconic D-28 first released by Martin in 1931 features a dreadnought body, mahogany neck, Indian rosewood back and sides and a solid spruce top.
Specific features unique to the HD-28 include the re-introduction of herringbone binding on the body and rosette, which was unfortunately discontinued in 1946, as well as other pre-war appointments such as scalloped bracing and the zigzag (or zipper) back stripe.
Another distinguishing feature of this model is the 2R designation which refers to an oversized sound-hole; noticeable thanks to a distinctive fingerboard overhang and double herringbone rosette. We believe these were made in a fairly limited run during the mid-'90s and is likely modelled off the 1935 Martin D-28 owned by bluegrass legend Tony Rice which had its sound-hole enlarged.
Overall the guitar sounds phenomenal and plays great. It's a wonderfully light build for a D-28. There is some wear as would be expected from a 30 year old instrument, and some areas where binding has become un-glued and re-glued. The nut has also been filled in at the G string to give the slot a little more height. There is also an endpin jack installed and ready for a pickup to be connected.
A fantastic example of the classic Martin dreadnought guitar ready for many more years of music with a new owner.
